Stress

What is Stress?

Stress has become an issue of the 21st century!

Stress is when the body is not in a state of natural balance. Stress, fear and anxiety are a basic natural automatic instinctual reaction in humans to a real or perceived pressure. The pressure is not only about what is happening around us, but is often about the demands and expectations we place on ourselves. In prehistoric times, the stress response served as a very important survival and self preservation function. As we are no longer exposed to as many physical threats, today our survival is more dependent on socialisation. Our ability to survive and prosper is much more dependent on our social and intellectual skills. How we relate to others and socialise has evolved to where individuality, individual ability and achievement are honoured and social adeptness, outward courage and conformity are rewarded while the opposite leads to shame and a sense of failure as a human being. Our failure to acknowledge the natural state and place stress has in our lives, as well as our resistance to stress leads to the development of anxiety, depression and other coping strategies such as addictions, eating disorders, insomnia.

At the same time the individual perceives this real (physical) or imagined (psychological) danger, the fight and flight response is triggered. If the danger is real it will be resolved either way. If it is a psychological worry, the same hormones and chemicals are released into the body with nothing to fight or flight from. This causes undue wear and tear on the body, especially if this state is sustained for long periods of time.
